When to use the Disk?
Do you know the feeling of literally leaking and having to change your tampons every hour on the first day of your period? Then the menstrual disc is just right for you. It can hold up to 6 tampons, even more than traditional cups. No more sleepless nights or surprises in the morning.
Many women report that traditional tampons worsen their abdominal pain during their periods. Tampons often feel hard and uncomfortable, causing the vagina to cramp additionally. With the menstruation disk, it's entirely different: they are ultra-soft and perfectly conform to your vagina.
Conventional tampons not only absorb blood but also the natural moisture, causing dryness in your vagina. On the other hand, the menstrual disc, made of 100% medical-grade silicone, is hypoallergenic, does not absorb any liquid, and maintains the balance of your vaginal flora.
Removing a partially dry tampon isn't a pleasant experience. As your period becomes lighter towards the end, the menstrual disc is the best choice to avoid drying out your vagina.
Conventional tampons can sometimes be disruptive during sports or while swimming. Movement might make your tampon noticeable, and the retrieval string is often too long. Additionally, tampons can absorb water while swimming, losing their tightness. Conversely, the menstrual disc fits so well that you'll completely forget you're wearing it. Moreover, it remains completely leak-proof even during vigorous activities and in water.
As the menstrual disc does not rely on suction, it can be used safely alongside an intrauterine device (IUD).
Sex during your period is possible with the menstrual disc. The disc is so flexible that neither you nor your partner will feel it. It comfortably fits in the vaginal fornix, the widest part of your vagina, even during penetration. This means you don't have to worry about blood stains on your fresh bed linens.
Pain patients, including those with conditions like Endometriosis, often find it challenging to use regular tampons or cups with suction due to severe pain. The smooth menstrual disc provides relief and offers greater comfort during wear.
Are you bothered by the suction created by traditional menstrual cups? Does it possibly exacerbate your period pains? Or do you find removal challenging? Then the menstrual disc is your solution! It operates without any suction yet remains leak-free for up to 12 hours. It's incredibly soft, ensuring you'll hardly feel it. Additionally, with a bit of practice, emptying and removing it is much simpler than with a suction-based cup.
On average, a woman spends about CHF 200-300 per year on disposable menstrual products like tampons and pads. On the other hand, when you purchase a menstrual disc, it lasts for up to five years. So, during this period, you save over CHF 1000, produce no waste, and don't have to worry about stocking up on tampons regularly.
Before usage:
- Boil the disk for 5 minutes. The easiest way to do this is by placing the disk in a cup, pouring boiling water over it, and letting it sit for about 5 minutes.
- Wash your hands.
- Hold the disk between your thumb and forefinger and squeeze it at the double rim.
- Insert it towards the cervix.
- Now, push the front edge upward behind the pubic bone to ensure the disk is securely positioned.
After usage:
- To empty the disk during the day, gently release the front edge from behind the pubic bone using your index finger (it works best from above), pull the disk slightly out of your vagina, allow it to drain, but without removing it entirely.
- Remove the disk entirely every 12 hours by pulling it out with your index finger (from above) at the double rim. Empty it and rinse it briefly with water.
- Boil the disk for another 5 minutes at the end of your period.
How does automatic emptying (also known as auto-dumping, self-emptying) work?
For some women, the disk empties itself on the toilet. It's a fantastic special feature of the menstrual disk!
This happens because the pelvic floor muscles you engage during toileting also push against the rim of the menstrual disk, causing it to empty.
It might happen automatically for you, or you might need to consciously apply some pressure or tighten your pelvic floor muscles.
But don't worry, the menstrual disk won't suddenly empty itself while you're doing yoga, swimming, or squatting. This only occurs in the WC position with a tightened pelvic floor.
FAQ
You can wear the disk for a maximum of 12 hours. Every 12 hours, you should completely remove the disk, empty it entirely, and rinse it briefly with water. In between, when you go to the toilet, you can also empty the disk without removing it completely.
For hygiene reasons, consider getting a new disk approximately every five years. You should replace it earlier if it has cracks or holes or is generally not in good condition.
Wenn you go to the toilet, you can empty the menstrual disc in between without having to completely remove it: Hook your index finger on the front rim (it's easiest from the top), pull the disc out a little from your vagina so it can empty itself. It helps to alternately tighten and release your pelvic floor muscles. This allows the disc to be completely emptied. Then, don't forget to push the double rim back up behind the pubic bone.
Every 12 hours, you should completely remove the disc, empty it entirely into the toilet, and rinse it briefly with water in the sink. Alternatively, you can do this best in a squatting position under the shower.
If the disc has slipped a bit deeper into the vagina, for instance, after sex, you can squat with your legs wide apart and relax to make it easier to remove. The menstrual disc can't get lost inside your vagina, so you'll definitely be able to remove it. If you're unable to remove it yourself, please consult your gynecologist.
Maybe you're one of the women for whom the disk fits exactly and very tightly between the pubic bone and cervix, making automatic emptying not possible.
No problem, you can still easily empty the disk without removing it entirely: To do this, release the front edge from the pubic bone using your finger (preferably from the top) and only pull it out a little bit.
Empty the disc and rinse it under warm water. You can also use some hand soap to clean off any blood residues.
At the end of your period, boil the disc for 5 minutes. The easiest way to do this is by placing it in a cup, pouring boiling water over it, and letting it sit for about 5 minutes.
I like to use an old toothbrush to thoroughly clean the double rim of the disc before boiling it.
The menstrual disc is hypoallergenic and made from 100% medical-grade silicone from Germany. It is free from BPA, plasticizers, phthalates, or other chemicals, and is ISO-certified as a medical product. Therefore, it doesn’t negatively impact your vaginal flora or pH balance.
Our menstrual disc is made entirely from medical-grade silicone sourced from Germany and is produced by our socially responsible partner in China. Over the course of two years, we've been in contact with various producers within and outside Europe, testing different disc models and materials. We found the best disc quality (as thin as possible) with our current production partner in China. Regarding the material, we opted for a German silicone manufacturer known for its highest medical quality. By doing so, we managed to combine the best material with the best manufacturing process. We package the disc in our workshop and design all packaging ourselves.
While producing everything in Switzerland would be ideal, at present, it remains considerably expensive. If we were to do so, the cost of the disc would be substantially higher. With PERIOD, our goal is to advocate for innovative menstrual products to be accessible to as many women as possible, which is why the production cost plays a crucial role.
Keep the menstrual disc, once completely dried, in its original packaging or another bag, stored in a place protected from light and out of reach of children.
In contrast to a menstrual cup, the menstrual disc operates without creating a vacuum. This simplifies both wearing and emptying, potentially reducing period discomfort.
Moreover, the M-L size disc offers a larger capacity than most cups, making it an ideal solution for women with heavy flows.
With some practice, the menstrual disc can be automatically emptied while on the toilet. Even without 'auto-dumping,' emptying is simpler compared to a vacuum-based cup, as the disc doesn't need to be removed entirely each time.
Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a very rare but potentially life-threatening condition that can occur with the use of tampons. Symptoms can suddenly appear and resemble those of the flu: fever of 39°C (102°F) or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, and/or a sunburn-like rash. If you notice any of the above symptoms, remove your tampon immediately and seek medical attention. Be sure to inform the healthcare provider that you are menstruating and have been using a tampon. TSS can be life-threatening and requires early detection and treatment.
